Position in the Soil Chemistry and Environmental Microbiology Research Group

Degree Program: PhD/MSc

Supervisor: Tariq Siddique

Professorial Rank: Professor

Department: Renewable Resources
Project Start Date: 01/05/2024

Project Description:
Surface mining of oil sands has a significant environmental footprint. Currently oil sands tailings ponds contain
more than 1 billion m 3 of fluid fine tailings (FFT) that need to be reclaimed. Current research deals with
hydrocarbon biodegradation under different anaerobic redox conditions, mitigation of methane emissions
generated during hydrocarbon biodegradation and reducing the emissions of other reduced sulfur compounds
from tailings ponds and end-pit lakes. The successful candidate will work on research project related to any of
these aspects of tailings management and reclamation.

Stipend Amount/year: $28000

Initial requirements:

  • Knowledge of environmental microbiology and biogeochemistry as well as acquaintance with molecular
    biological (omics) techniques
  • Open to undertake scientific approaches and to engage intense numerical analyses, data interpretation
and writing up of findings, and publications.
