Grad Student Position Details

Project Title
Bioinoculants and Greenhouse Gases (GHG) Emissions Reduction in Annual Crops.

Degree Program
MSc

Supervisor
Guillermo, Hernandez Ramirez

Professorial Rank
Professor

Department
Renewable Resources

Project Start Date
09/01/2025

Project Description

This project will examine the greenhouse gas fluxes, focus on N2O, CO2, and CH4, from wheat, peas, and canola fields with and without applying bioinoculant. We will use static closed chamber techniques in replicated plots and experimental sites located in Central Alberta. In addition of temporal flux protocols, intense controlled experiments and laboratory analyses will be also conducted. Ancillary measurements will include soil available N as ammonium and nitrate concentrations, soil pH, soil moisture and temperature, and functional genomics. Collaborative research will be translated into applications for producers. This information will help producers make data-driven decision-making to build resilience and sustainability in farming systems.

We are seeking for a responsible student interested in the project.

Initial requirements:

Knowledge of soils, plants, carbon and nitrogen cycling

Proactive, flexible, dedicated, well-centered, responsible

Open to undertake scientific approaches and to engage intense numerical analyses, data interpretation and writing up of findings, and publications.

Other key assets:
A teamwork aptitude ─ ability to work independently and with others,
A desire to deliver, share and present results in public,
Computer skills,
A 3.3 GPA or better, and
A valid driver license and clean driving record/abstract.

For this project, the selected MSc or PhD student will be based at UAlberta campus in Edmonton to complete coursework requirements and laboratory measurements. This collaborative research project entails recurrent day trips for field activities within 200 Km distance from Edmonton.

Please e-mail transcripts (scanned unofficial copy), CV, a letter describing any research experience and interests (1-page), and a list of three references.

Annual stipend: CAD 33,000, with a typical period of 24 months for MSc, or 48 months for PhD.
