Project Description

M.Sc. or Ph.D. Position in Genome Editing and Plant Biotechnology

Project description: We are seeking a highly motivated and responsible candidate to join our research project focused on improving crop productivity and sustainability through canola hybrid breeding. This project integrates genome editing technologies with advanced molecular breeding techniques. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative team in laboratory and greenhouse environments, conducting research that includes: (1) In silico assessment of gene families; (2) Generation of plant binary constructs; (3) Canola transformation; (4) Physiological and phenotypic evaluation of transgenic plants and (5) Genetic analysis and molecular characterization.

Qualifications: PhD candidates must hold an MSc in plant molecular biology or a related field. MSc candidates should possess a BSc in biology or a related discipline. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a strong foundation in plant molecular biology, and PhD candidates should also have hands-on experience in plant tissue culture and transformation. Knowledge of computational methods for analyzing gene and protein sequences is advantageous. Excellent organizational abilities and communication skills (both written and verbal) are essential, as is a proven capacity for effective collaboration. All applicants must satisfy the admission requirements established by the University of Alberta’s Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science. (https://www.ualberta.ca/agriculture-life-environment-sciences/programs/graduate-programs/prospective-students/agricultural-food-and-nutritional-science/afns-admission-process/index.html).

Funding: Full stipend, travel to conferences and research costs.

Location: The student will be co-supervised by Dr. Gavin Chen (Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Plant Lipid Biotechnology, University of Alberta) and Dr. Daoquan Xiang (Adjunct Professor, University of Alberta; Research Officer, National Research Council Canada, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada), and carry out research activity in both labs. Coursework will be carried out at the University of Alberta.

Start date: September 2025 or later

How to Apply:

Email Dr. Chen at gc24@ualberta.ca with subject “PhD Application – Plant Biotechnology – [Your Full Name]” and (1) One file containing your CV, a brief motivation letter (Max. 1-page highlighting interest and qualifications), and contact information for three academic or professional references, and (2) Unofficial academic transcripts.
