Project Description

Worldwide, sustainability governance scholars and practitioners alike are increasingly recognizing that transforming unsustainable socio-ecological global systems requires better understanding of intersecting cultural, political, and socioeconomic drivers of societal change. This Tier II Canada Research Chair project explores both the conditions for a successful sustainability transition (“transition governance”) and how  governance itself is transformed as a result of sustainability imperatives (“governance in transition”) by looking at church institutions as “sustainability transition agents” which can fulfill various roles: from providing a platform of articulation and mobilization, service-provision, policy advocacy to becoming a site of cultural-practical innovation and experimentation and individual orientation for social-ecological sustainability. The team leader, Dr. Beling, is searching for a graduate student research assistant for the fall term 2023 (extensible for a max. of 4 academic terms in total) who is motivated to be part of a research team, become involved in international networks, and be part of an exciting, innovative project which takes issue with key questions for the future of humankind. The candidate will also have the chance to pursue her/his own project within the broader framework of the CRC in Transition to Sustainability.
